1. Word Order (SOV)

📐 Subject → Object → Verb

Unlike English (SVO), Amharic puts the verb at the END. Think of it as: "I bread eat" not "I eat bread."

English: I drink coffee
Amharic: እኔ ቡና ጠጣሁ
Ine buna tetahu = I + coffee + drank
ልጆቹ ትምህርት ቤት ሄዱ
Lijochuh timhirt bet hedu
The children went to school (children + school + went)

❓ Rising Intonation

Questions are often just statements with rising intonation (your voice goes up at the end), or by adding a question word.

ደህና ነህ? → Question: "Are you fine?" (voice rises)
ወዴት ትሄዳለህ? Wedet tihedaleh? = Where are you going?
8. The Definite Article ("The")

📌 Suffixes Instead of a Separate Word

Amharic doesn't have a separate word for "the." Instead, it adds a suffix to the noun.

ቤቱ betu = the house (m)
ቤቷ betwa = the house (f) / her house
ሆቴሉ የት ነው? Hotelu yet new? = Where is the hotel?
